Typical Bitumen Content by Mix Type
| Mix Type | Bitumen |
|---|---|
| General Asphalt | 5.0% - 5.5% |
| High Traffic Roads | 6.0% - 7.0% |
| Rigid Pavements | 4.0% - 4.5% |
| Binder Courses | 4.5% - 5.5% |
| Wearing Courses | 5.5% - 6.5% |
| Stone Mastic Asphalt | 6.5% - 7.5% |
This calculator uses one underlying engine to solve the full bitumen quantity problem in a single pass: enter length, width, and thickness to get area and volume; add your mix density to get total weight; add bitumen content percentage to split that weight into bitumen and aggregate; and optionally add a price per tonne to get a cost estimate — all from the same set of inputs.
What this calculator computes
- Area (length × width) and total volume (area × thickness)
- Total asphalt mix weight, based on your specified density
- Bitumen weight, based on your specified bitumen content percentage
- Aggregate weight (the remainder of the mix after bitumen is subtracted)
- Estimated total material cost, if you enter a price per tonne
How to get an accurate result
The calculation itself is simple arithmetic — the accuracy of your result depends entirely on the accuracy of your inputs. Measure length, width, and thickness as precisely as your project allows, and use the density and bitumen content values specific to your mix design rather than generic defaults where possible. If you don’t yet have a lab-confirmed mix design, typical bitumen content ranges by mix type are a reasonable starting point for early estimating.
| Input | Typical Value | Where to Find It |
|---|---|---|
| Density | 2,200–2,400 kg/m³ (asphalt mix) | Mix design report or supplier data sheet |
| Bitumen content | 4.5–7.5% (mix-dependent) | Job mix formula (JMF) or mix design report |
| Thickness | 25–100mm (layer-dependent) | Project specification or pavement design |
Add a waste allowance before ordering
This calculator gives you the theoretical quantity based on geometry alone. Real jobs lose a few percent to compaction, handling, and edge trimming — see the [asphalt waste percentage guide](/guides/asphalt/asphalt-waste-percentage-guide) for how much to add before placing your order.
When to use a more specific calculator
This general-purpose calculator handles the full quantity, weight, and cost calculation together. If you only care about one part of that output — say, you already know your tonnage and just need a cost figure, or you need a converted litre/tonne figure for a spray job rather than a mix — our more targeted tools below are faster to use for that specific question. Each one uses the same underlying math, just surfaced through a UI built around a narrower question.
Common calculation mistakes to avoid
| Mistake | Effect | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Entering thickness in mm without converting | Volume off by a factor of 1,000 | This calculator converts automatically — just select the correct unit from the dropdown |
| Applying bitumen % to aggregate weight instead of total mix weight | Bitumen quantity overstated | Always apply the percentage to the total mix weight, not the aggregate alone |
| Using a generic density instead of your mix design value | Weight and cost estimates skewed by several percent | Use your supplier’s data sheet density whenever you have it |
| Forgetting a waste allowance before ordering | Running short mid-project | Add 5–10% to the calculated quantity before placing your order |
